State tax deduction or credit

Contributions to Kansas AND non-Kansas state-sponsored 529 plans of up to $3,000 per beneficiary per year by an individual, and up to $6,000 per beneficiary per year by a married couple filing jointly, are deductible in computing Kansas taxable income. Rollover contributions are not deductible. Kansas taxpayers that make a contribution between January 1 and the tax filing deadline are allowed to choose either the current tax year or previous tax year in which to take the individual state income tax deduction.

Which 529 plans does Kansas offer?

Kansas offers two direct-sold 529 savings plans and one advisor-sold 529 savings plan, all managed by American Century. The direct-sold Learning Quest 529 Education Savings Program is available to residents of any state, as is the direct-sold Schwab 529 offered exclusively through brokerage Charles Schwab & Co. The advisor-sold Learning Quest Advisor plan offers portfolios with funds from American Century as well as other leading investment managers.

529 ABLE accounts let Americans with disabilities save tax-deferred for education and other expenses without impacting eligibility for public benefits.

The Kansas ABLE Savings Plan is offered through the National ABLE Alliance. The plan is created under the state's ABLE legislation to authorize the establishment of savings accounts empowering individuals with a disability and their families to save private funds to support the individual with a disability and to provide guidelines for the maintenance of such accounts.
